Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few of the most common questions asked prior to joining CAP.  For a full FAQ list, check out the National CAP website, here.

How old do I have to be? Senior Members must be at least 18 years of age and there is no maximum age.  You do not need to have been a cadet to join and you do not need prior military experience either.

Cadets must be at least 12 and no more than 18 upon joining, but can transfer to senior membership anytime after the age of 18.

What is the cost to be a member?
**all costs listed on this site are for Iowa and are paid annually - For a complete listing of membership costs by state, go here.**
Senior Member - $70 to join and $60/year for renewals.
Cadets
- $37
Cadet Sponsors
- $30
Aerospace Educator - $35
Am I expected to join the military? No.
Do I have to wear a uniform? Senior members may be required to wear a uniform during some activities - such as when flying in CAP aircraft. Senior members may wear the USAF style blue uniform or one of the distinctive CAP uniforms. However, some members choose to serve quietly without wearing a uniform.
How much time will I have to give each week? Most squadrons meet weekly for about 2 1/2 hours, and offer special activities on the weekends and during the summer.

Cadets meet each Tuesday from 6:30-8:30pm and Senior Members meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:30pm at the Red Oak Airport.  During the months of November, December, January, February and March we also meet on the 3rd Saturday from 1-8:30pm.  During those Saturday meetings we also hold awards and promotions ceremonies where we welcome the families of our members and the community to come and see what we do.  Aside from these meetings we also participate in fly-ins, SAREXs (Search and Rescue Exercises) and various other flying and community related activities.

All members are encouraged to participate as often as they like, but we understand that school, work and family must come first.

Am I considered a member of the military? No, you are a civilian and do not have any obligation to any branch of the military. You can not be deployed, called to active duty, or forced to serve in any branch of the US Armed Services in any way.
Who leads and supervises the cadets? CAP takes its responsibility to safeguard youth very seriously. The adult volunteers who interact with cadets (known as CAP senior members) have been fingerprinted and screened by the FBI. Also, as part of their leadership training, advanced cadets lead and mentor new cadets under the guidance of senior members.
